Zirconia Crowns

You will find all the information you need about Zirconia Crowns on this page.

Zirconia Crowns :

1. Introduction

Zirconia crowns are high-strength ceramic restorations made from zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂). Due to their excellent durability, natural aesthetics, and biocompatibility, they have become a popular alternative to metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns in restorative dentistry.

2. Composition and General Types

Zirconia is typically Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal (Y-TZP).
There are several main types based on structure and manufacturing:

  1. Monolithic Zirconia – full zirconia crown, very strong, less translucent.

  2. Layered Zirconia – zirconia core covered with porcelain for better aesthetics.

  3. High-Translucent Zirconia (HT) – designed for anterior teeth; combines strength and translucency.

  4. Multilayer Zirconia – gradient color and translucency from cervical to incisal, giving a very natural appearance.

4. Mechanical and Aesthetic Properties

  • Flexural strength: 900–1200 MPa (monolithic)

  • Fracture toughness: 6–10 MPa·m½

  • Translucency: varies with yttrium content (more yttria = more translucent but less strong)

  • Wear resistance: excellent against chipping and abrasion

5. Advantages

  • Superior strength and longevity

  • Biocompatible and metal-free

  • Excellent aesthetics with natural color matching

  • Minimal plaque adhesion and gum irritation

  • Can be used for crowns, bridges, and implant prostheses

Types of Zirconia by Origin / Brand

Zirconia materials differ depending on the manufacturer, country of origin, and production technology.
Below is an overview of the most common types used in dental labs around the world:

Type / Origin Examples or Brands Characteristics Typical Quality & Use
German Zirconia VITA YZ®, Ivoclar IPS e.max ZirCAD®, Amann Girrbach Zirconia® Very high purity, excellent translucency, precise milling accuracy. Considered premium quality; excellent for anterior crowns and bridges.
Japanese Zirconia Noritake Katana®, Kuraray Noritake Zirconia® Advanced multilayer technology, natural gradient shading, excellent strength. High-end aesthetic option, popular for full-mouth and anterior cases.
Swiss Zirconia Straumann®, Ivoclar Vivadent® (Swiss brand) Extremely precise milling, high biocompatibility, excellent optical properties. Top-tier used in implant-supported crowns and long bridges.
Turkish Zirconia Turkom-Cera®, Upcera (licensed manufacturing) Decent strength, improved translucency, lower cost than European types. Mid-range quality; good balance between aesthetics and price.
Chinese Zirconia Upcera®, Aidite®, Doceram®, Whitepeaks (some collaboration) Wide range of quality; newer brands show good performance, but some may have inconsistent translucency. Economical option, often used for posterior crowns or temporary restorations.
American Zirconia BruxZir®, Glidewell Laboratories® Very strong (suitable for bruxism), high flexural strength, good translucency in new generations. Excellent for monolithic restorations in posterior teeth.
Korean Zirconia Zirkonzahn Asia, Zioss®, Dentium®

Good consistency and strength, modern CAD/CAM production.

  • Disadvantages
  • Fabrication Process
  • Longevity and Care
  • More opaque than glass ceramics (E-max)

  • Harder to adjust and polish intraorally

  • If not properly glazed, can cause wear on opposing enamel

  • More expensive than traditional PFM or metal crowns (especially premium European or Japanese types)

    • Tooth preparation & digital scan

    • CAD/CAM design using specialized software

    • Milling from zirconia block (pre-sintered)

    • Sintering at 1350–1500°C for full density

    • Staining & glazing for shade matching

    • Cementation with resin or glass ionomer cement

  • Average lifespan: 10–20 years with proper care.
